.:Chosen Themes:.

I chose the three themes; love, betrayal and jealously.
I'm going to talk about each theme with a different pair of character as i have a word limit of 100 words on each theme.
With love I'm going to talk about Beatrice and Benedict. How love can take more forms than one, this i believe is still relevant. An example is; you love your dog differently to you love your brother or love is still present even if both parties are pretending it's not like it Beatrice and Benedict's case.
For betrayal i will talk about Don John and Don Pedro, how Don John lies about his brothers intentions as a part of an elaborate plot. Don Pedro didn't even find out about this until later when the second stage of the plan was in action, when Claudio saw Margret in the window. Don John lied to his brothers face at that point and told him he cared about him even though it wasn't the case.
Jealously i might talk about how Claudio is jealous of who ever he thought was in the window with Hero even though it wasn't her. Perhaps i will talk about ? <--- can you give me a better idea?

.:Flick Through:.

I had a flick through the play, that we will be studying next term, Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. I found the format a bit confusing, although i think i will quickly adapt to it. When we were watching the movie in class, i found the language, somewhat hard to understand. However in the book, it's much easier, this could be due to the characters, in the movie, speaking to fast for me to comprehend, what they were saying. Either that or perhaps, i just pick up more meaning when i read the words, not hear them. A character guilty of confusing me, a little, is Benedick, with his fast speech and old fashioned words and phrases he can be hard to follow sometimes. Just a little of what i think of it all, so far. :)

.:The Hunger Games Trilogy:.

The Hungers Games, and The Hunger Games - Catching Fire both were unforgettable. It's the most imaginative story, since the creation of Harry Potter. I would put them in league with Twilight, Harry Potter, Vampire Academy and more. This is not only me either that has been caught up in these novels. Stephen King has said "constant suspense... I couldn't stop reading", as well as Stephenie Meyer quoting "The Hunger Games is amazing", many other great reviews have been made about the two books in this, almost completed trilogy.

For Stephen King to say this book has great suspense, is huge, as he is the ultimate, thriller writer of all time. I was talking about the book 'Gone' having a totally unique story line, well 'Gone' has nothing on The Hunger games trilogy! I thought the end of the first book was breath taking, well wait until you've read the second book, Catching Fire.

The author is Suzanne Collins, and as far as i can tell, these are her first books. I'm not quite sure, what drew me to this book in the first place. I read the first book, before it was really popular, so to speak. When i brought the book, there were no posters or recommendations for it. However, the book has an interesting title, which must of drawn me in. What i found though is, the blurb doesn't really do the book any justist, i almost didn't buy it, when i read it's blurb. Although, the book seemed different, so i gave it ago, and now i'm a massive fan. It just goes to show you, don't judge a book by its blurb. The blurbs of books, I've learnt over the years, don't always accurately portray a novel. Maybe you could read the blurbs of these books, then read the novels and tell me whether you agree or not. This could all just be me, being silly, i just don't know.

Overall, The Hunger Games trilogy is as close to a perfect adventure novel as I've ever read.
As the Financial Times put it "This is a fine entry into the canon of post-apocalypic brutality fiction", i think they put it quite well. :)

.:About the Characters:.

The main characters in this play that are good are;

  • Claudio (he's boarder line bad due to some of his negative characteristics)
  • Benedick
  • Beatrice
  • Hero
  • Leonato
  • Don Pedro

The main characters in this play which are bad are the following;

  • Borachio (follower of Don John)
  • Don John (the villian of the play)
  • Conrad (other Don John follower)

How the different characters change;

  • Both Benedick and Beatrice change their oppion of one another, also they stop mocking each other as much and fall in love.

.:Story Line of Much Ado About Nothing:.

'Much Ado About Nothing' is the story of two very different sets of lovers, Beatrice and Benedick and Claudio and Hero. The play is set in the City of Messina, in Sicily

"The main plot of Much Ado revolves around obstacles to the union of two young lovers (Claudio and Hero), the plays sub-plot, the "merry war" of the sexes between Beatrice and Benedick. Benedict thinks he hates Beatrice but really loves her and Beatrice who thinks she hates Benedick but really loves him" (http://www.william-shakespeare.info/shakespeare-play-much-ado-about-nothing.htm).

"Beatrice is extremely quick-witted and verbally adept, frequently amusing her relatives and friends with elaborate stories and jokes, often at her own expense. Though she is generous and good-hearted, she has a tendency to use her wit to mock and tease other people. Benedick is the target of her harshest mockery" (http://nfs.sparknotes.com/muchado/characters.html).

This fits in well with what the first site was talking about. If Beatrice was targeting all her mockery at Benedick, he must of been retaliating some how. There love must developed through there love-hate relationship.

.:Fashion:.

"See'st thou not, I say, what a deformed thief this fashion is? How giddily 'a turns about all the hotbloods between fourteen and five-and-thirty?" (Borachio, in Much Ado About Nothing 3.3.130-32). This is a quote from the play we will be studing. I had found this on a web site talking about court fashion. The web site was; http://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/Library/SLT/society/fashion.html

However i have found the following about fashion in Elizabethan England;

  • It was influenced by geometric shapes rather than the natural shape of the body

  • Designed to give the impression of a small waist

  • Men would sometimes wear girdles, this was to obtain the wasp waisted look

.:Women/Education:.

Elizabethan women were;

  • tutored at home because there were no schools for girls
  • not allowed to enter University
  • They couldn't be heirs to their father's titles (except female royals)
  • They couldn't become Doctors or Lawyers
  • There were no Elizabethan women in the Army or Navy
  • Elizabethan women were not allowed to act in the theatres (but women at court were allowed to perform in the Masques)

.:Facts About Sir William Shakespeare:.

  • Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, in 1564.
  • Between about 1590 and 1613, Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more.
  • Many of these plays were very successful both at court and in the public playhouses.
  • He died and was buried his home town in 1616.
  • His plays were comedies, histories and tragedies.
  • Shakespeare’s plays began to be printed in 1594, they appeared as a small, cheap pamphlet called a quarto.

Information above was mixed around but came from this website; http://www.bl.uk/treasures/shakespeare/basics.html

  • Boys and men played all the parts in Shakespeare's plays in Elizabethan times.
  • Sir William Davanant (1606-1668), godson of Shakespeare and poet laureate of England, claimed to be Shakespeare's illegitimate son.
  • Shakespeare was 17 or 18 when he married. His wife, Anne Hathaway, was 26.
  • No one knows how Shakespeare died. Among the possibilities are kidney disease, murder most foul, and too much to drink.

Something interesting but confusing i found out was;

  • Shakespeare wrote most of the lines in his plays in blank verse, which is unrhymed iambic pentameter.
  • An iamb is a unit of rhythm consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.

The information above was selected from the site; http://www.cummingsstudyguides.net/xfacts.html

.:Whats Happening Now:.

I have read half my book, so far and it's amazing. It's different to anything i have read before, which always makes something more interesting. I have noticed, that I'm yet to actually tell you the story line. This is mostly because it’s so complex and hard to explain. I've been putting it off, but not anymore.

This is the 'Gone' story line; The story follows the life of Sam (my books not with me at the moment and i forget his last name), he lives in a small house with his mother, who works at Coast Academy (a posh school on the outskirts of the small coastal town they live in). His father had left them when Sam was very young, and a couple years prior, to the beginning of this story Sam's mother had a partner, which i later discovered left because of Sam.

Sam isn't normal, by any means, he has a weird power that he doesn't understand nor knows how to control. He can shoot a beam of pure light energy from his hands, but only in extreme circumstances. One night, Sam had woken up to his mother and her partner fighting (the book didn't mention the partners name, but for the sake of my review, he shall be called Bob). Bob had a knife in his hand and Sam got really frightened, he thought Bob was trying to hurt his mother. So he panicked and shot a pure beam of light from his hand. Bob got rushed to hospital, but the doctors couldn't save his hand. Bob had been trying to tell everyone that Sam had shot him but his mother covered for him and said that Bob was seeing things. Due to Bob leaving Sam's mother they had to move into that small, horrible house due to the fact that, Sam's mother couldn't afford to keep the nice house.

The book starts on a normal school day, Sam is just sitting in class next to his best mate (well only real mate) Quin. When suddenly all kids age 15 and over just disappear. As you can imagine a world without adults would be pretty chaotic, the state of panic and confusion among the children got taken far beyond controllable. Most younger kids looked towards Sam for guidance and leadership, all of which Sam was too scared to take on. *(You find out that, Sam is some what a local hero, he once saved a whole bus of kids. They were all on a bus, when suddenly the bus driver had a heart attack, Sam rushed up the front, grabbed the steering wheel, and drove the bus to safety, then dialled for an ambulance. All of which was done whilst trying to calm a bus load of little kids.)*

Sam has had a crush on the smartest and prettiest girl in his grade, Astrid, for as long as he can remember. However he had never acted on it, until all the chaos began. Astrid has a 5 year old, autistic brother whom was out with his father when everyone 'poofed'. Astrid asked Sam if he could help her locate little Pete (Petey). Astrid didn't know where he was, because she didn't know which parent he went to work with on that day. So Sam and Quin left town to help out Astrid, they ended up finding him up in the nuclear power plant, where Astrid's dad worked.

The nuclear power plant had once been hit by a asteroid, the asteroid hit the tank containing the dangerous radioactive substance, luckily the asteroid was travelling that fast that it made a hole a couple kilometers deep, which took all the toxic stuff in with it. However instead of treating it properly, the workers just cemented over it. This is why the town is nick named, Fallout Alley; this is also the reason why the population decreased significantly and is only now a very small town.

Anyway, a sphere has formed within a (not sure what number) kilometers radius around the power plant, trapping everything and everyone off from the normal universe, thats to say, (they're still in the normal universe). If the giant wall is touched, you get seriously burnt, this wall can't be penetrated and some even think even if it is broken there will be nothing on the outside. That is just the basics of the story. So much more has happened since then, every week i shall fill you in a little. However this is the last time I'm going back to fill in detail. From now on I'm just going to continue to tell you about what is happening, which might confuse you, but in the end it will all make sense. Otherwise it takes just too much time, just look at how much has been written here, just briefly about the beginning.

Thanks for reading :)

Types of Elizabethan Entertainment and What They Were:

Plays - Starting as plays enacted in town squares followed by the actors using the courtyards of taverns or inns ( referred to as Inn-yards ) followed by the first theatres ( great open air amphitheatres built in the same style as the Roman Coliseum ) and then the introduction of indoor theatres called Playhouses

All of the above was directly from http://www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-entertainment.htm .

Elizabethan Entertainment was a huge part of the lives of nearly all whom lived in this era in England. The lives of Elizabethans were hard which is why entertainment was so highly regarded, a chance to celebrate was never turned down. Court entertainment was regular and often a nightly occurrence for the higher societal people especially the nobles and royal. Where as the entertainment the poor had was totally different. However feasts and festivals were frequent during specific times of the year, most of which were dictated by the church.

.:Book Update:.

I've finished another book in the space of time between this review and the last therefore i haven't really read a lot more of this book 'gone'. i shall, however give you the basic run down of this book. They live in a little sea side town, nick named fallout alley. This is due to their nuclear power plant being hit by a asteroid. when it was hit all the toxic stuff went underground. Where they just sealed it with cement. Due to this (i think) the main character Sam and some other have developed strange powers.... Tune in next week for more!

P.S please don't think this is a weird book about kids with powers, its not! I'll explain it more as the weeks go on!

.:Co-Curricular Reflection:.

Rowing is a great sport which I strongly encourage everyone to get involved in. This was my second year as apart of the ‘rowing family’, it was a great season that has provided me with many pleasant memories. Rowing is a sport which requires a large amount of determination and dedication. It involves three morning training sessions a week, that take place at TSS rowing shed at 5am. There is also an x-training session which entails a lot of sit-ups, lunges, push-ups etc. As a co-curricular, its fun keeps you fit, and allows you to become more organized with all your school work. I initially signed up for rowing because I’m not a very athletic person; therefore I’m hardly good at any sports other then snow skiing and lawn bowls (I know that’s lame). I thought that I could possibly be good at rowing which I can say, I haven’t proved wrong. For all people who think rowing is a really hard sport, it is but at least it doesn’t involve too much hand-eye coordination, something that I don’t have a lot of. Something rowing hasn’t gotten rid of, in case it probably intensified it, is my fear of sharks. I’m not going to lie to you; there are bull sharks in the river we row on. Apart from that, rowing is great, join up for next season!

.:The Make Your Own Ad Task:.

Once you have designed your advertisement you need to write a summary of the ad, addressing the following things:
1. What message you hope the ad will deliver.
2. Why did you make certain choices regarding colour schemes, graphics and words?
3. How effective do you think this ad will be?
4. Who is the target audience of your ad? I.e which age group, boys or girls, etc.
Once you have finished, the ad and the summary need to posted on your blog.

.:My Ad:.

My advertisement consists of three images and two pieces of text. The images are colourful which mean they attract the eye and the language is simple, so the largest variety of kids can understand. This ad I tried to target at children from the ages ten to sixteen, of both genders. I hope this ad will deliver a bit of humour also the realization that bullies aren’t cool. As well as if you bully nobody would like you. I’m sure if you animated this ad it would be amazing, having the little blue and orange people fighting, then the group walking away from the bully. I thought of maybe having red writing but then that would distract the viewer away from the images which were purposely chosen for their colours.

I think this ad would be very effective however only if other people see what i do in the ad. It grabs your attention and the words "Bullies don’t like being bullied, So, why would the victim?" suggests that; why would you do something to someone else, if when its done to you, you hate. It brings in that old idea of, "do one to others, as you would like done to you". The the image down the bottum with the bully isoladed hopefully will tie in with the words above it reading "No One Likes A Bully".

.:Advertisement Two:.

This advertisement is of a cityscape under water, in a pool. In large black letters above the city are “Don’t let this be Our Future, Save Our Rainforest, Stop Global Warming”. This makes it clear what the ad is initially is trying to say. However there are multiple layers to this ad, which is only the first. When it says “Save Our Rainforest”, it means we have to stop the logging because the trees are what take in the carbon dioxide and change it into oxygen so that we can breathe. The fact that the pool is underwater suggests that because of global warming sea levels are rising, to such an extent that the city is now under water. It’s saying this could happen sooner or later, if we keep going. The colour sceme plus with the multimedia is what creates that underwater effect, and without it the ad wouldn't have nearly the impact it does. The audience this ad is addressing is kids, teeenagers and adults. The audience range is quite large, however i doubt the younger kids could get the full impact of what it's trying to say.

.:Advertisement One:.

This advertisement is clearly targeted at children of a young age group. This is because of its simplicity, bright colour and illustration. It only has five words on it, these words are very basic and two words start with G and the other three starts with R. This is due to the fact that children understand something better if it’s got a rhythm to it which is the reason for the alliteration.

The colour scheme of this advertisement is a bright green and white. This is to help the children understand the message that trying to get across. It attracts there attention. Also green is the colour everyone, even kids, associate with the environment. As well as the fact the words say “Go Green” and everything is green. The measure its trying to communicate is basically recycle, and to “Go Green”, care about the environment. The frog is catching the recycle sign on its tongue, there are many bright recycle signs floating around. These signs are replacing flies which I’m sure little kids would pick up but some people could miss.I think this advertisement achieves its purpose. It’s cute, catching and would grab lots of little kids attentions, along with the big words “Go Green”, the messaged will clearly get across.

.:Task:.

1.Provide a brief description of what you see in this advertisement.
2. Explain what you think the purpose of this advertisement is. Support your answer by referring directly to the stimulus.
3. What sort of audience do you think this advertisement is aimed at? Support your answer by referring directly to the stimulus.
4. Why do you think the creator of this advertisement has chosen to use particular graphic features? Consider things like pictures used, colours, size, etc. Explain your answer in depth.
5. Why do you think the creator of this advertisement has chosen to use particular language features? Explain your answer in depth.
6. Do you think the advertisement achieves its purpose? Explain and support your answer.

.:My Current Book:.

<-- This is my book, at the moment. I had finished my latest book and i wanted another one, so my little brother suggested this. So far it's really good! It's kind of a drama/thriller it's not really scary but the idea is a bit creepy.

There are several main characters and it jumps to different peoples circumstances. There are three different story's going at the moment, they all live in the same town and have been effected by the same phenomenon however some most of the characters are linked and know each other. Most attended the same school.

Next post I'll actually tell you whats happening, so join in then!

.:A Letter To The Editor, Both Opinions:.

234 Minnie Street,
Warsaw, Poland

Courier Mail,
Vista Boulevard,Melbourne,
VIC 9473

A Letter to the Editor: Against the Article

Dear Editor of the Courier Mail,

Excuse me, but it has come to my attention the wrong message that you have portrayed in your article “The Real Cost of Posh’s Locks”. This article has sent a message saying that Indian ladies are subjected to ill treatment and get there hair sold without them knowing. Just to make it clear, these ladies wouldn’t “wait patiently in line”, if they were being mistreated, would they? The answer is no, they wouldn’t. They are perfectly willing to have their heads shaved and they do so for religious purposes.
That brings me to my second point, yes their hair is sold and yes they aren’t notified of it. However the temple is just trying to raise money to keep it clean and well kept so future Indian generations can benefit from it. Also if it’s not sold then it would just be thrown out, these devoted religious women wouldn’t want that. The article even states that “Beauty comes at a price”, it’s not like the hair is sold on for cheap, and the hair is sold for thousands of dollars and is very popular with the A-listers. This then turns profits for top hair salons, and if it wasn’t for the Indian women’s hair, a lot of business would be affected. Thank you for reading my letter and I hope you have taken onboard my option.

Kind Regards,
Miranda

A Letter to the Editor: Agreeing With the Article

Dear Editor in Chief,

I read the Courier Mail’s article titled “The Real Cost of Posh’s Locks”, I strongly agree with this article. Beauty shouldn’t come at such a price, Indian ladies shouldn’t have to wait “… in line on the cold stone floor of a temple in India to have their hair shaved off with a dry razor…” This is partly due to their religion, and I understand that however “not a cent is awarded to the women”; this is dishonest and wrong. The money might be used for a good cause like restoring a temple, but it should be done honestly with the consent of these ladies. The ladies that participate in this religious ceremony are normally very poor and the profit of there hair could mean not worrying about having food on the table for a month or having access to clean drinking water. I’m shore this article bought to people’s attention the injustice of what’s happening in the hair extension business.

Kind Regards,
Miranda
